One-way rental planning

Return the rental car somewhere else without guessing on fees.

Use topic checklists and route guides to compare different drop-off fees, airport-to-city returns, one-way SUVs, vans, supplier terms, and the route details that can change the final price.

Different drop-off availability, pricing, fees, and supplier rules vary by location, route, date, and vehicle class — always confirm with the supplier before you book.

What this site does

Different Drop-off is a free, independent guide to one-way and different drop-off car rentals — picking up in one city and returning the car in another. For each popular route we explain which companies allow the different drop-off, how the one-way drop fee tends to work, where you return the car at the destination, and the tolls and gotchas on the drive. We don't take bookings; we point you to the right supplier and let you reserve directly.

Why a different drop-off needs checking — and how to win

The drop fee is the wild card

A one-way "drop charge" (or inter-city fee) can dwarf the daily rate. Some brands charge nothing on a U.S. one-way; others add a big one-time fee. Compare the fee, not just the rate.

Not every location takes a return

One-way rentals must be booked to a participating drop-off location. Book in advance and confirm your brand actually has a return desk where you're headed.

Same region is usually cheaper

Returns within the same metro or region often avoid the biggest drop charges, while cross-country one-ways and specialty vehicles cost more or aren't allowed.

How we source this: each row links to the rental company's own published one-way / drop-off policy, with the month we last checked it. These policies change often and vary by route, location and vehicle class, so treat them as a guide and always confirm the current one-way fee and terms with your supplier before you book.
